When do you keep a friendship? When do you Pass?

old couple in loveDo you have friends around you that lift you up when you are down? Do they pass to you their confidence in you? Do they tell you, you can do anything you put your mind to? If you have friends who do this, count yourself blessed. I hope your parents did this too.

Nothing could be worse than to have a friend who is always negative, believes nothing good is ever going to happen to them, let alone you. They always see the worst…never the best in others. They are always quick to point out your flaws, and if you listen carefully, you will hear them comparing your flaws to others. Somehow, they just never make you feel good about yourself.

Well, if so, what do you do? That is what one of my friends asked me. She wanted to know if she should ditch the friendship? Did she tell them how she felt, and see if they are even aware of what they are doing? Did they do it deliberately?

Lot of questions could be asked, and we can come up with many answers.

For me, I had to be honest and tell her my trule feelings in the matter. I said, “I would rather tell them that a true friend lifts up their friend when they need it. A true friend helps you see your full potential. A true friend encourages you when needed. A true friend wants to help you become all you can be. A true friend is always there urging you on, knowing you can make it.”

I went on to tell her, “If the friend is a true friend, they will understand what you are saying, and I think they will make an effort to keep the relationship by changing and being the friend you need.  If they can’t see it, then I think it is time to put the friendship behind you and move on.”

Let’s face it. We don’t like losing friends, but perhaps the person wasn’t the friend you really thought they were.

I hope that this doesn’t happen to us often in life. How about you?

  1. Love the quote. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Sometimes friendships are tedious and even harmful. My daughter sent me this quote from her desk calendar yesterday. Something to think about.

“If we would build on a sure foundation in friendship we must love friends for their sake rather than our own.”
    -Charlotte Bronte
